FAQ

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?

Surf lessons are located in Kihei at Kalama Park across the street from the 76 Gas Station and the little popular Kihei Caffe at 1945 S Kihei Rd.  Once you make a booking you will receive a confirmation with directions to the surf van.  If you need any assistance the morning of your booking just give us a call or text at 808-264-9136.

WHEN ARE LESSONS?

Lessons are Monday – Saturday in the mornings.  Sundays surf schools are closed due to Maui county business permit rules.  We typically recommend the earlier the better due to the wind that tends to pick up late morning and through the afternoon (making the conditions not as optimal as the water gets choppy, more challenging, and not safe for lessons).

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

We recommend wearing something to surf in, as well as bring along a towel, sunblock (reef-safe), and water to hydrate for after the lesson.  Lessons include all equipment (boards, reef shoes, and rash guards).  You may even want to bring some dry clothes to change into after the lesson.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD I BOOK MY LESSON?

We recommend booking early for peak travel seasons (spring, summer, and winter breaks) as lesson availability can book up weeks in advance.

WHAT TIME DO WE CHECK-IN?

We recommend arriving 15 minutes early so you have time to park, check in, and apply sunscreen.

DO YOU HAVE PHOTOS TO PURCHASE?

Yes, there is a water photographer available at surf lessons.  They are a separate company and coordinate payment and photo delivery after the lesson.

CAN I BRING MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO WATCH?

Yes!  Bring your family and friends to surf with you or to watch!  They will be able to see you and can watch from shore.

WHAT’S NEARBY WHERE WE SURF?

There is on-site parking, public restrooms and showers, a walking path and playground, plus restaurants, food trucks, and cafes nearby.

WILL WE HAVE ACCESS TO THE EQUIPMENT AFTER THE LESSON?

In regards to equipment, typically it’s only available during the lessons as we bring all the gear and the surf van to the park only when lessons are scheduled.  So it would just depend on if there was another lesson booked right after you.  Most people find that they are good after 2 hours in the water.

WHAT IS THE AGE REQUIREMENT?

There is no age requirement.  However, we do recommend that all children under the age of 10 have a private lesson for safety reasons and to gain the ultimate experience.  If not, all children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by a parent in the water.

IS THERE PARKING ON SITE?

Yes, there is plenty of parking on-site in the parking lot right next to and/or near the surf van.

DO WE NEED A RENTAL CAR?

We strongly recommend getting a rental car while on the island.  There are many different companies you can rent from and it’s (in our opinion) the way to see and explore the island!

WE WILL BE COMING FROM A CRUISE SHIP – IS THIS LOCATED NEAR THE PORT?

If you are coming into the port at Kahului it is guesstimated 25 minutes by car.

I’M AN ADULT BUT I’VE NEVER SWAM IN THE OCEAN BEFORE  (ONLY A SWIMMING POOL)… CAN I STILL LEARN TO SURF AND DO I NEED TO WEAR A LIFE JACKET?

Yes, you can definitely learn to surf!  Our location is a nice long gentle wave and it’s semi-shallow water (knee-high to chest high) so you can stand at any time when you aren’t on your surfboard.

DO YOU HAVE GIFT CARDS?

Yes!  Just contact us and we will be happy to assist you!

WHAT IS THE CANCELLATION POLICY?

Payment is made at the time of booking and followed by a confirmation email and/or text with directions to Kalama Park. If you need to reschedule for another day we can happily assist you. Please contact us at least 24 hours in advance. There is a $25 cancellation fee. No refund given for cancellations made under 24 hours (or for no shows). If Surf Yoga Maui must cancel a booking due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, we will reschedule your lesson. In the event that rescheduling is not possible, customers will receive a full refund.

WHERE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND WE STAY?

In regards to accommodation, there is a wide range of accommodation options on the island… including High-End Resorts, Condos, and Bed and Breakfasts.

Surf lessons are in central Kihei… which has more condo vacation rentals in the area.  Wailea is the next closest little town with condo rentals and then also the bigger resorts.   There are also numerous places on the other side of the island… but Kihei and Wailea are the closest to Kalama Park.  A lot of our clients who are interested in condos use Airbnb and VRBO for seeing what rental options are available.  The ones interested in the bigger resorts tend to book their hotel rooms directly with the resorts.
