Where to Take Surf Lessons Near Wailea
A tour we think you'll love
The closest surf lessons to Wailea are located in the heart of Kihei at Kalama Beach Park. Beginner and intermediate surfers will feel immediately at home as wave riders of all skill levels frequent this surf location.
The park has gentle, beginner-friendly waves, and semi-shallow water making it one of the best places to learn to surf and progress your skills.
When are Surf Lessons
Surf lessons are in the mornings Monday–Saturday.
We recommend scheduling your lesson early in the morning, as the wind traditionally picks up later in the morning, making the water conditions most optimal earlier on. It’s also a great time to enjoy the water before the peak season crowds arrive.
How Long Are Surf Lessons
Surf lessons are two hours long and all equipment is included (boards, reef shoes, and rash guards).
What to Bring to Surf Lessons
We provide all the surf equipment you need to get started to learn to surf. Just wear something to surf in (such as a swimsuit or board shorts), and bring reef-safe sunblock, a towel, water to stay hydrated, and dry clothes to change into after your lesson.
Can Family And Friends Watch
Yes! Bring your family and friends to surf with you or to watch and cheer from the shore. The park has on-site parking, public restrooms, showers, a walking path, and a playground. Across the street, you’ll find cafes, food trucks, restaurants, and shops with Hawaiian trinkets and locally made products.
How to Get To Surf Lessons
Most surf students have a rental car, or they arrange transportation with their hotel and/or vacation rental. Uber and Lyft are also popular forms of transportation.
Surf lessons are located in Kihei at Kalama Park across the street from the 76 Gas Station and the little popular Kihei Caffe. Once you confirm your surf lesson booking(s) you will receive a receipt and a confirmation email with directions to the surf van at Kalama Park where you will check in.
We recommend arriving 15-20 minutes early to find parking, put on sun screen, and check in for surfing classes. There is plenty of parking in the parking lot by the surf van.
What if You Want Multiple Day Lessons To Progress Your Surf Skills
If you are interested in progressing your surf skills, then more time in the water is what you need. You can progress your surf skills by booking multiple-day surf lessons such as our 3-Day Surf Progression (each day is a two-hour lesson).
You will learn the anatomy of a surfboard, surf etiquette, ocean awareness, safety tips, paddling techniques, pop-up, reading the waves, timing, turning, and navigation skills.
When Should You Book Your Surf Lessons On Maui
Book your surf lessons now! We recommend booking early (especially for the peak family travel seasons of spring, summer, and winter breaks) as lesson availability can book up weeks in advance.
